This guy is a solid instructor, unfortunately he teaches the course somewhat out of order as it makes logical sense to me. He also doesn't give enough examples too many straight proofs. But, his test are very fair and straight forward.

Horrible at teaching. All he does is a bunch of proofs which you don't even need to know. He does a few examples, which are what you really need to pay attention to. The exam questions are really straight forward. Look off past exams and book problems and you SHOULD be fine. Discussions are worth going because they go over the homework problems.

As someone noted below he does give a ridiculous amount of homework but my TA was generous enough to shorten the amount of work due. (Last homework assignment only had 5 questions)

If you are looking for a class with little work involved, this class is not for you. The amount of homework he assigns is absurd. However, the tests are extremely easy and straightforward, so you don't have to know the material too in depth to get a good grade, just the basics.

I don't know what it is about the UMD math department, but every professor seems to suck majorly and Tzavaras is no exception to this. He doesn't seem to go in any particular order and does long, tedious proofs. Half the time he was gone anyway and we had a sub who was basically exactly the same. He also gives mass amounts of homweork, which is impossible to get done. It took the TAs half the semester to figure out that Tzavaras was trying to kill us with the sheer volume of homework and they finally cut it down some. The DifEq book isn't too great either so you can't even effectively teach yourself from it. Make sure you get a good TA if you end up in his class, though this time they stuck us with a very inexperienced grad student who didn't like to help students. Overall a worthless, tedious class.

He does mainly all proofs during lectures, so it is a bit dry...His tests come straight from the HW he assignsthroughout the semester. The final was combined with the other teacher (Wolfe), and you could def. tell which problems Tzavaras put on there since they were identical to the hw problems.

ok in lec. does a lot of proofs. I stopped going after the first test in which i got a C+. on the second test i got a A without going to lec. If u don't got to lec def. go tot he one before an exam. he does a good job of reviewing for the tests. He made the final really hard which is y i probably got a B....i would not recommend him unless the other prof teaching math246 was wolf, which is y i choose to take him
