Reviews for John A. Tossell
Average Rating:| Anonymous Course: CHEM135 Grade Expected: October 4, 2010, 6:38 am | I honestly did not learn a single thing. Unless you want to teach yourself take another professor. |
| bioe012 Course: CHEM135 Grade Expected: A July 10, 2009, 5:40 am | Generally a fine professor and extremely nice man, if you don't mind reading the textbook and doing extra learning outside the class. Lectures were mostly pointless and boring; you will do fine just doing the homework and reading. He does interesting environmental research and incorporates it into his curriculum. Exams were similar to his practice exams, so definitely do them. There is usually at least one challenge exam problem to see if you really understand the content. Curves were extremely minor, so expect the grade you see on BlackBoard. |
| rbterp Course: CHEM271 Grade Expected: A March 7, 2009, 7:58 pm | Dr. Tossell had poor control of the classroom so many people would talk during the lectures, making it difficult to hear him. His lectures were ok, but not great, so you have to make sure to read the textbook before attempting any of the end of the chapter homework problems. He really likes environmental chemistry, so he will try to incorporate that into the course, whereas Dr. MS's 271 course has a "biochem flavor." Most of the exam problems were from the back of the book so I tried to just do most of them before the exams and bought an answer key to check them. If you are premed, I would recommend trying to take MS b/c I did not think Tossell was a very effective teacher, especially on topics that are important for the MCAT like acid base titrations, solubility constants, or finding the orders of a reaction (1st order, 2nd order, etc). |

| Anonymous Course: CHEM135 Grade Expected: C December 30, 2008, 6:54 pm | He cannot teach. I recommend getting another professor. From the first exam I learned that what he focuses on in lecture and reviews on the practice exams does not mean it will be on the actual exams you take. Classes were boring and pretty much pointless. You'd honestly be better off just using the textbook than going to his lectures. |
| Anonymous Course: CHEM135 Grade Expected: A December 11, 2008, 3:59 pm | His classes are boring as hell, if hell was that boring, which I doubt. I must say this if you are going into is class, DON'T. Also his tests are somewhat tricky (there are non-standard English words he throws at you, like isoelectronic). Also at the end of the year, at least for CHEM 135, he curves a few people's grades up so that the %As and %Cs are the same as what is posted on this site (19% As, and 34 or so% Cs) |
| Anonymous Course: CHEM135 Grade Expected: A December 4, 2008, 5:37 pm | His class is awful. He knows the stuff but just does not know how to teach. I basically learned nothing from his lecture. |
| Anonymous Course: CHEM271 Grade Expected: A- May 24, 2008, 7:13 pm | Exams are random: some are hard and some are really easy. A lot of the exam questions come directly from back of book problems. Generous curve. |
