Reviews for Tien-Mo Shih
Average Rating:| kvizzle321 Course: ENME232 Grade Expected: C November 23, 2011, 9:12 am | Shih is a very nice and friendly professor. Do not take Shih for Thermodynamics. When i had him in spring of 2010 we only had 7 exams for our grade, with no homework to reinforce your learning. He is very hard to understand, and while he posts all of his lectures online and lets you use the book and any notes during exams, he doesn't teach the class well enough to actually learn the material correctly. I also took Shih for heat transfer. Don't do it! Nice guy but not a very good teacher. He should only be teaching Matlab! |

When he finds out ENME271 is no longer part of the mechanical engineering requirements, he will be heartbroken. He is a decent teacher for heat transfer. The exams (one every other week) are open notes (there is only an online textbook for his class). There is no homework, and 2 (and a half) labs. I would recommend taking ENME332 with him as opposed to the other teachers, his class was fairly easy. |
| Anonymous Course: ENME332 Grade Expected: A- April 8, 2011, 9:14 am | So Shih is kind of a bad professor, but TAKE HIM FOR THIS CLASS!! Heat Transfer is FAR easier with him than with anybody else. The course is separated into 7 exams, one every two weeks, that are all very short and not too difficult. There is no HW and only 2 lab sessions, sometimes quizzes for EXTRA CREDIT in discussion. If you're not bad at learning through a book, definitely take Shih for this class. |
| coolkat141 Course: ENME271 Grade Expected: B March 1, 2011, 10:36 am | I took Matlab over winter with Shih. Mind you, the winter courses are completely different than the regular semester classes. Typically they are much more fast paced and tend to be harder because you have so much more material packed into a couple of weeks. That being said, the matlab course was challenging, but it can be done. They are a few things to note about Shih if you dont know who to take, he has a strong Chinese accent that is hard to understand at first, but u get used to it after awhile. He is extremely gifted in matlab and knows his stuff pretty well, but in return expects alot out of you as a result. His exams and open book/notes everything and weren't too bad. If you go to his office hours and talk with him he'll probably change your D into a C. just practice typing in the code and eventually you'll get how to do matlab. |
| jahs389 Course: ENME271 Grade Expected: A- March 3, 2010, 2:23 pm | I really like Shih but, I can't rate him higher, at least for this course... I learned a lot in this course, I also worked my ass off for it. A lot of what I learned was heat transfer stuff as he teaches ENME332 also. I sat in on one of his 332 lectures it is nearly identical which will help you later. However, you will have a pretty hard time understanding the course without Linear Algebra and strong Diff Q. Skills. Lin Alg isn't required for ME, and a lot of people take Diff Eq concurrently - this is makes 271 harder but, this isn't Shih's fault. You also need the Thermo/Heat transfer. Shih will teach you this stuff but he expects you to be comfortable with it too quickly and everyone in the class was getting confused prior to doing any actual code. I urge you to go to office hours!! and to work to really UNDERSTAND the material. Everything is open book/notes/computer but if you don't get it this doesn't help. |
| Anonymous Course: ENME271 Grade Expected: December 15, 2009, 3:06 pm | Tien Mo isn't very good at getting students to learn things. If you don't want to struggle all semester and come out of it knowing nothing, then register for another professor. |
| a778999 Course: ENME232 Grade Expected: A May 24, 2009, 6:15 pm | The entire course is essentially a single concept. In the beginning, I was completely clueless, but a light bulb went off in my head before the second midterm and the rest of the class was a piece of cake. His teaching isn't that good and the book is pretty much useless so you have to rely on studying the examples by your TA. |
| Anonymous Course: ENME320 Grade Expected: B January 12, 2009, 10:32 am | Shih is lame sauce. He can't teach and the book is lousy. He's a great guy though. Really funny and nice. But his teaching methods are just not good at all. Other teachers are definitely easier as I've seen from their average grades |
| Anonymous Course: ENME271 Grade Expected: B December 8, 2008, 2:20 pm | Difficult to understand. He doesn't have good computer skills nor is he able to describe why he is doing what he is doing, both things that you would think that a professor would be able to do. The book is useless and he is only a fraction of a step better. He likes to try to do examples that seem to be from his heat transfer class. Also, I would advise taking notes on this class on a computer since he is constantly revising his programs because they don't always work the first time. The average on his tests are 20 out of 40. If you can afford putting off this class until spring or take another teacher, I would strongly advise it. Otherwise, good luck |
| Anonymous Course: ENME271 Grade Expected: B August 5, 2008, 11:26 am | Difficult class, his language barrier doesn't help. He is, however, very helpful during the lab sections and during his office hour. He really makes students use their critical thinking skills to solve the problems on their own. If you are up for a challenge, take Shih, I have heard that other professors teaching this were easier. |
