Reviews for Thomas J. Capo
Average Rating:| Jenae Ramos Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: B May 18, 2011, 4:41 pm | Course taken Fall 2010 semester. I'm a psychology major, and although I appreciated some of the content, the class really wasn't my favorite classes. In case you haven't encountered a teacher who tests you on things NEVER LEARNED IN CLASS, don't take your chances. In case you have, do the class if you want more frustration. - Capo can test you on things that were NOT in lecture, NOT in the book, and NOT in lecture notes. BEWARE. - His lectures are boring. One-sixth of the class attends lectures regularly. It really does appear to be pointless going to the lectures since they're dry and their notes are always posted online. - You DO have cushions for your grades: SONA studies and not-so-bad quizzes. Consider a different PSYC100 teacher. |
| Anonymous Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: B February 17, 2011, 12:05 pm | I absolutely HATED lecture. Capo is extremely boring and annoying. The only reason I'm not giving this a 1 is because my TA was really cool and taught us everything we needed to know since Capo was useless. Also, we had a snow day on the day of our final so he graciously gave us all a 100% hoping to boost our grades (which was very nice because we were allowed to not take the test). However, I was short 2 points in the class to get an A. AKA if I had gotten one multiple choice question correct on any of the other tests I would have gotten an A and Capo wouldn't budge. This really annoyed me. |
| Anonymous Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: December 9, 2010, 11:35 am | He is not as bad as people say. The class is graded entirely on tests, but if you put in the time to study the material and actually show up to lecture (and pay attention in lecture) you will do fine. I have not gotten below a 90 on any of his tests, and i did not even put in much study time, just a little right before the tests. Also he drops the lowest test score so even if you do poorly you can still get an A. Lastly, he gives out 20 free extra credit points for completing the Psychology Study hours that are mandatory for all Psyc classes anyways. |
| Anonymous Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: December 4, 2010, 3:17 pm | awful professor. extremely boring. i was interested in psychology but this man takes away all interest from the course. do not take his classes. he is the worst professor ive had so far. avoid him and do not take the course if his class is the only available class. |
| Anonymous Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: November 23, 2010, 11:11 am | If you aren't prepared to learn all the material yourself then I would suggest taking another class. I took it first semester freshman year and had to drop it because I fell so far behind. Less than a quarter of the class came to lecture because they were just so terrible. |
| FatJesus Course: PSYC200 Grade Expected: August 19, 2009, 10:14 am | This man is objectively not concerned with the success of his students. Not only does he give the last exam back 2 days before the final, the average on said exam was around 33%. He does not curve at all. Let me spell this out: Over HALF of the class CANNOT PASS over HALF of his exam. This is a reflection on how effective his teaching style is and how "fairly" he grades. And since the whole grade is based on exams, you're screwed. If a person cannot effectively communicate knowledge to students, then he is by definition NOT a teacher. |
| Anonymous Course: PSYC200 Grade Expected: February 5, 2009, 1:11 pm | AVOID HIM LIKE THE PLAGUE!! HE IS ABSOLUTELY AWFUL!! the best advice he ever game me was when he told me to drop his class...i probably should have listened...seriously do NOT take the class with him...he should be fired! He doesn't care about teaching you...he knows he won't get fired since he's been teaching for so long that he doesn't care... |
| Anonymous Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: A- December 14, 2008, 7:05 am | Dr. Capo really ruined this class for me. First of all, he expects you to memorize over 500 pages in a textbook, along with all of the chapters of another book, and all of the material in his lectures (which rarely correspond to material in the books). It's a ridiculous amount of information to memorize. Then, the tests are focused on details and problems often have more than one plausible answer. I studied ridiculously hard for this class all semester, and I received good grades on the first two exams (somewhat by luck that I chose the right answers to ambiguous questions) and a C on the third exam. It's really frustrating to study all week for an exam and still receive a C. Now I'm going to have to take the final, and I don't know how he expects us to even begin to study all of the information from the whole class for one exam. Also, Dr. Capo is incredibly boring. He reads right off of his lecture notes, which he posts online a few days before each exam, so there's really no point in even going to class except for the weekly quizzes. This class was really awful. I wish I had looked at all of these other terrible reviews of Dr. Capo before I chose to take this class this semester. It wasted so much of my time. |
| babygnau Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: C December 8, 2008, 10:21 pm | Yea Capo is horrible. The lectures are so boring that I literally stopped going after the 2nd week. I never studied, never read assigned material, and still got a C in the class by randomly guessing on exams and quizzes. A "C" in his class is from a 60 to an 80, and with 8 bonus points from psychological research studies I managed a 62. Never take this guy, his tests are unfair, and the notes are pointless and online. Stay away. |
| bkretzer Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: B December 5, 2008, 8:10 pm | Dr. Capo is a terrible teacher. He is very boring and does not present the information well. If you study you ass off you will get a C. His exams are 70% information that you can study for and 30% of it is random. This is why most people do so bad. Also, he is a pervert. He talks about sex a lot. He is obsessed with rats. One day he combined the two and discussed rat sex. It was completly off topic but he enjoyed it. Overall, I would not recommend this course. He is a terrible teacher and a creeper. |
| Anonymous Course: PSYC341 Grade Expected: September 2, 2008, 6:44 pm | I dropped the class after attending one lecture. He is boring, difficult and even creepy. Would never take a class with him. I can understand why he dosnt have even one good review on ratemyprof |
| Anonymous Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: D July 27, 2008, 10:34 pm | if you took AP Psych in high school, this course is nothing like it. Capo knows his stuff, but doesnt present it as well as he should. i stopped going to lecture after the first week. also if your going to take this class with Capo SERIOUSLY study.. discussion quizzes were pretty hard as well. take Murnane. i went to a few of his lectures and they are REALLY funny. |
| bphilli1 Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: C May 18, 2008, 11:54 am | If your looking for an easy A stay clear... After the first 2 weeks of Capo putting you to sleep in lecture, you wont show up again. His lectures are pointless, and have no correlation to assigned reading material. You will end up with a C, and it will ruin your GPA. |
| FreeTofu4You Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: B April 4, 2008, 12:52 pm | Please do not take this class with Dr. Capo. He is very knowledgable, however, his lecture skips around and is very difficult to follow. Lecture has nothing to do with assigned book reading, which is a type of teaching style, however, when preparing for the weekly discussion questions, there is know way to know what to study for. |
| mhd101 Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: A February 10, 2008, 9:27 pm | He is a really bad professor but you can get so much extra credit in the class that I got an A by getting Bs on all the tests and I didn't have to take the final because I had it dropped. The tests are really hard though. All the choices make sense and the questions are always the most random details you wouldn't even realize were in the book or his lectures. If you want to actually learn something do not take his class. |
| Anonymous Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: December 24, 2007, 10:53 am | Avoid Capo at all costs!!! If you cannot switch to another professor drop the class and plan to take it with someone else, you will regret taking his class! CAPO IS AWFUL! There are weekly mini tests that are just as hard as unit tests. If you do not read every line in both textbooks he uses, you will not do well. AVOID CAPO! |
| JJC005 Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: December 16, 2007, 7:45 pm | OK, so I would agree he wasn't that good at teaching, but I found the class easy without ever opening the book. All he did was show slides and tell random stories/bad jokes. I would say if you are looking for an easy class, take it with him. If you want to get something out of it, don't take him. |
| Anonymous Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: B December 3, 2007, 11:22 am | this guy is the worse professor @ the university of maryland. i do not why the university puts up with him. he's just lowering their academic reputation by handing out C's to 50% of the class. Very rude to students as well. If I was the Dean, he'd be back in Indiana or wherever he's from. |
| lrobusto Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: D November 26, 2007, 9:46 pm | DO NOT TAKE PSYC100 FROM DR CAPO YOU WILL REGRET IT! This guy definitely knows his stuff but his classes are VERY VERY UNFAIR. He is boring in class. His tests are ridiculous (He expects you to know arbitrary facts that barely relate to the material. Also it's all multiple choice, but there are several choices on numerous questions that all are very plausible and you have to pick the one that makes the most sense even though they basically all do). BE WARNED TAKE MURNANE!!! |
| tootsieroll9 Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: November 26, 2007, 2:33 pm | Fabulous professor!!!! Very underated!!! Witty humor!!! Two thumbs up!!!! |
| Anonymous Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: November 21, 2007, 5:30 pm | Poor professor to have on this course. Slide-based lecture, essentially reads off of the slides, and also posts the same material online, therefore can get the same equivalent as reading it online. Tests may make use of readings, or questions that required close detail of the notes or reading. Overall, not a recommended professor for this course. |
| sbrown827 Course: PSYC200 Grade Expected: November 7, 2007, 12:15 pm | Awful. Does not communicate well with students. Does not approve of reviews for exams (ie: we were not allowed to hold review session or create our own review for exams) My advisor didn't even have anything nice to say about him. Had to repeat course. |
| ewagner1 Course: PSYC200 Grade Expected: October 31, 2007, 11:47 am | Awful professor, even my adviser warned me to stay away from him. Had to repeat the course and got an A the second time. |
| Anonymous Course: PSYC100 Grade Expected: C October 30, 2007, 3:24 pm | Teaches his intro to psych class like it's junior level graduate class. Doesn't understand the concept that it's an INTRO course, and makes tests and quizzes very poorly, so much so that it's hard to pull a B on most of them without reading every line of the texts and his notes. Lectures are just straight note taking for an hour(+) and makes you want to cry everytime he makes jokes that only your senile grandma might find entertaining. PICK ANOTHER PROFESSOR. |
| anneymarie Course: PSYC100H Grade Expected: A October 23, 2007, 1:15 pm | Mean and often offensive. Makes uncomfortable sexual jokes. |
