Reviews for Peter Weiss
Average Rating:| Anonymous Course: BMGT302 Grade Expected: A December 28, 2011, 6:58 am | The class was OK. His lectures are boring. I was able to complete all my assignment with the help of the TA's and the book but did not feel like I learned much. |
| Anonymous Course: BMGT302 Grade Expected: A August 30, 2011, 6:07 am | Professor Weiss would go over the PPT slides line by line. Then he would show us very simple examples and then he would throw a somewhat complicated assignment at us. I attended all the TA sessions and I stayed a little over the time limit in a few ocassions. I suceeded in this class thanks to the great TA's we had, otherwise I would have not gotten an A. |

The exams are pretty straight forward, and you get cheat sheets (I think 1-pg front back for quizzes and 2-pgs for exams?). The assignments are almost identical to his sample assignments. His syllabus is pretty clear. If you're the type of person who can't pay attention in class, then just go over the slides and example problems. Google anything you can't figure out. Honestly, this class is not that difficult. You don't need to be a genius at programming. You just need to know what to copy from his sample assignments (which are all uploaded on blackboard). Or if that doesn't help, then go to lab because they slowly go over the entire assignments step-by-step. If you're still failing after that, then why the eff are you an info sys major. |
| Anonymous Course: BMGT302 Grade Expected: B January 11, 2011, 10:10 am | Bmgt 302 sucks. Definitely the worse class for IS majors and the worst class I have taken at the Smith School. Dr. Weiss teaches you nothing. You get very little from going to class. You have 8 labs, 8 quizzes, two exams, and a final project. He says the quizzes are designed to help you boost your grade, but in reality they are very difficult-the average grade is about 7/10. The labs are impossible. Unless you are a genius at computer programming, you will not be able to do these w/o the help of the TA's. The exams are impossible-nobody does well and my advice would be to study the practice lab he posts. The final project is without question the worst project you will do at UMD. It takes so long, and it is impossible. You have to get the TA's to do it for you, because he teaches you nothing that is on the assignment. This was the most dreadful class I have taken at UMD. My advice is to go to labs (which are inconveniently scheduled at Thursday nights from 5-7) and get the student TA's to explain everything. Work in groups for the final project, because it will be the worst experience of your life. |

Really, you'll come out thinking you kicked butt and find out you got a 30% grade. Just do well on all the assignments. |

He is very clear on his expectations and is willing to help people out. The work for this class is not too bad, with a few short papers, one long paper, two short projects, and two quizzes. If you can get this guy for 301, definitely take him. |

Not only does he make lectures mandatory and has them all posted the first day of class, but he bases EVERYTHING on the lectures and rarely goes off topic. There is no textbook for the course, just maybe half a dozen short readings throughout the semester. If you attend lecture and pay attention you are basically guaranteed an A. Exams are around 30 MC and a few short essays (you can pick which ones you do). One of the most HELPFUL professors I have EVER had, always willing to give help and see you outside of class if necessary. The projects were not crappy as someone mentioned before, he goes through EVERY project and how to do them in class so its like an easy 98-100 percent (not kidding). It helped me learn how to use access as well as excel and now I know how to use them to organize other info. AWESOME class, is the reason I decided to switch to info systems. |

His class is relatively easy given you look at the slides and do the short essays. Some other things were graded a little harder such as group presentation and big case study. He uses many interesting relevant, current examples so thats a plus. Overall this class was a pleasant experience. |

| Anonymous Course: BMGT302 Grade Expected: B May 16, 2008, 9:54 am | I like the professor. Mr. Weiss will definitely help you out in a bind, and his real-world experience is definitely interesting and applies. He's very dynamic and if you ask him for help, he will assist you. However, and this is a BIG however, if I were to judge the class I would say that his teaching style is at times not adequate for teaching the beginnings of programming to business students. I relied on students and comp sci majors that new what they were doing to get by, honestly. It wasn't until the 3rd lab that I finally figured out the mental processes for programming and what was intailed. Also, nothing wrong with him but the TA was TERRIBLE! He barely taught correctly and was more of a help you out if you know what you're doing and it's a small question. Everything big or major he would shrug off or act as if it was simple thing for you to figure out instead of actually sitting down and helping you through a complex situation. The class itself definitely opens your eyes to programming. However, it's definitely you and the book on your own unless you have connections. Weiss is a good teacher, but not necessarily practical. |
