Course: This course is probably a good option for someone looking to fulfill a core requirement. However, if you are a GVPT major like I am, and you didn't or were not able to avoid this by taking AP government, you will be bored out of your mind. This is essentially a repeat of freshman high school government and barely touches upon any theory or advanced ideas about American politics.

Teacher: Professor Vietri is not suited to instruct a large lecture class. She is not at all an engaging speaker and she doesn't give any valuable information other than reading off of her powerpoints that contain paragraphs on the slides. Her exams weren't terribly difficult if you go back and review the lecture slides, and if you know much about American government this is not even neccessary. Discussions tended to be slightly better, sometimes going more deeply into political theory. Overall, if you have to take this course as a GVPT major you will find it very useless and if you have to take it with Vietri it will be doubly so.

Dr. Vietri is not the teacher to take for GVPT170. Her class was boring and I can honestly say that I don't feel I learned anything new. She "screams" her lectures at you in class because she doesn't like using a mic and her tone is the worst. Overall, reviewing the slides on blackboard before exams is what carried me through the class and helped me to understand the papers. She seems like a very great person and as if she would be a better teacher for a smaller class, but I would recommend not taking her for GVPT170.

Dr. Vietri is one of the few professors here who actually cares about her students. It is unfortunate that she has to teach a large lecture class, but if you get the chance try to take her for a small upper level (ive taken 3 classes with her so far).
If you develop a relationship with her, you will get an A and have a great recommendation to go with it.

Her class is a waste of time, you never need to go because all the information is online. Final was totally unrelated to all information posted on blackboard. It was some sort of national standardized test she claimed to have input on but the questions were largly unrelated to the material in the course. Overall, take this if you dont wanna show up to class and dont want to learn anything, but expect hell when it comes to the final

Maybe it's because the other reviewers had her for larger, lower level classes, but I've absolutely loved Professor Vietri. She's been one of the few professors I've had at Maryland who generally seems to care about her students. I was able to go to her with concerns about everything ranging from the course itself to my future career plans and got legtimately intested feedback.

There is absolutely no reason to ever take a class with this woman. Every lecture is a terror. I refer to 170 as the very worst class in anything that I have ever taken. The material is theoretically interesting as a GVPT major. Her lectures are read verbatim off of poor power point presentations. She yells at the class regularly for poor performance, she told our lecture that "you'll be lucky if you all can get jobs at WalMart." For the love of all that is good, do NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR, EVER, NEVER!

If you're looking for just an easy way to finish off a prerequisite, you'd probably think more of this class and professor than I did. I was hoping to learn something.

Instead, Dr. Vietri simply made up PowerPoint presentations, and then spent the class reading them to us. She also has a very irritating way of speaking, in which she repeats everything repeats everything. There was really no reason to go to class, as the lectures were online and she almost never had the slightest thing to add to them.

The TAs on the other hand were excellent, and the discussion sessions were interesting and well-run. We were assigned to write a page a week based loosely on the readings from the assigned book, and the environment was definitely one of openness to varieties of opinions. (The professor however, as the other review points out, did not keep her views private. I don't know enough to say whether she herself did anything to stifle discussion.)

Overall, I did not enjoy this class as much as I expected to, despite the good discussion sessions and despite the relative ease with which I got an A.

Lectures are boring and really there is no point in attending because she puts everything online. The course is pretty easy. Discussion attendance and participation is 40% of your grade. Nothing from the text book is tested, so you don't need to read it, you just have to be able to insert a reference here and there for your weekly writing assignments. the exams aren't bad, and the final is really really easy, 50 percent is take home. Vietri is a hardcore liberal and doesn't try to be fair or balanced. Her writing assignments and assigned readings are very leading and don't really allow for differing views.
