Reviews for Eva Marie Stehle
Average Rating:| Anonymous Course: CLAS170 Grade Expected: B July 8, 2010, 7:19 pm | This course requires alot of work. The professor is great but its the TA who makes or breaks your grade. |
| TerpGuide Course: CLAS170 Grade Expected: A+ June 8, 2010, 2:46 pm | This class is not difficult at all. All you need to do is read sparknotes and everything that isn't on sparknotes isn't very long. Also, on bookholders you can find terp notes for the class. There are weekly papers that you can kinda bs. THE BIGGEST THING: IT ALL DEPENDS ON YOUR TA. Get a feel with for your TA so you know how to write your papers. If you do that you'll be fine. OH. And don't get fooled. This is Mrs. Stehle, not her husband who I hear is very awesome. |
| Anonymous Course: CLAS170 Grade Expected: B May 23, 2010, 5:45 pm | this class required the most time out of any of my other classes. there's so much reading for it, and if you dont read every page of every book, you'll not do well on the exams. she picks quotes out of the books for the exams, but of course she picks the most random ones we didn't even discuss. the TA's are pretty arrogant and unhelpful and the grading system is stupid. we never really know what our grade is,not even a ballpark. i took this class thinking it would be an easy HL, but it wasnt. |
| MusickVideo Course: CLAS170 Grade Expected: A May 18, 2010, 5:31 pm | Stehle is great. She is very passionate about mythology and knows how to teach the course very well. Lectures are powerpoint that typically summarize the important themes from the stories you are reading for homework. There is reading due every class period, but it's not much at all (usually between 20 and 40 pages), and its all stories, nothing dense. You must attend discussion, and it is important that your TA likes you or you make a name for yourself in discussion because your TA grades everything (literally) and participation is also a reasonable chunk of your grade. Grades consist of 1-2 page papers due every week in discussion (based on the reading you will do for that class period), 2 midterm exams, and 1 final exam (in Spring 2010, you were allowed to bring a 3x5 notecard for the final). Participation is also a big chunk, and there may be an opportunity for extra credit. If you do the reading, go to class, and basically do what a typical student SHOULD do, you'll ace this class with flying colors, and get to read some pretty interesting literature along the way. |
| purpleeagle Course: CLAS170 Grade Expected: A May 16, 2010, 4:24 pm | Professor Stehle certainly is knowledgeable about the material and tries to pass on her enthusiasm to the students. Lectures can be pretty dull and dry sometimes, but she does explore some interesting themes in our readings that we may not have explored in independent readings. Tests are pretty straightforward, one/two-page papers every week, and plenty of reading. |
| jamgord Course: CLAS170 Grade Expected: May 4, 2010, 4:54 pm | I thought this would be the most interesting HL to take, but I was wrong. I mean the stories and myths are neat if you're interested in that kind of thing, but the way she goes over material makes it VERY hard to stay interested. They are the most boring lectures ever, and I have to fight with myself not to fall asleep. She is a really nice lady and my TA, Jocelyn Cooper, was really good. For the exams, she gave us two possible essay questions so you could get your thoughts together beforehand and also have time in class to answer and think about the other questions. She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities on the test, so make sure you go over almost every character in the play because they might be and EC question. The weekly discussion essays are pretty manageable, but keeping up with the readings is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING! You have to read and try to sparknote as little as possible, so when it comes to identifying the passages on the test, you actually know them. Overall, the class was harder and more boring than I expected, but if you like reading and have a good TA, you should be able to manage. |
| dm Course: CLAS170 Grade Expected: A June 1, 2009, 11:52 am | she's really passionate about the subject, and seems to care a lot about her students. the class per se, is pretty easy. u dont really have to attend class to figure out what is going on. READ SPARKNOTES. i got an awful TA though, made life pretty hard for us,gave pop quizzes and the kind. the disc. papers aren't too bad; if you are good at 'bs'ing, the papers will be a joke for you. |
| Anonymous Course: CLAS170 Grade Expected: May 21, 2009, 8:35 pm | Stehele is a pretty good lecturer, but there are times I fall asleep because she talks so slowly. Do not schedule a class far away right after her class because she always goes 2-3 minutes over time. Also, it is the TA who determines your grade because s/he is the one who does all the grading (exams, hw, and participation). Unfortunately, I had a tough TA who rarely gave out check pluses on hw assignments and took unnecessary points off on exams. It was annoying because it would never say why I was marked off, so I felt like my TA was just making up numbers to deduct. As for the exams, they are not relatively difficult, but you HAVE to read. There are identifications (names, concepts), quotes that you must identity, short answers, and an essay. Three essay questions are provided before the exam, but Stehele only picks one out the three. The discussion papers are not too bad because they are only 1-2 pages long. Overall, the class entails a lot of reading, but the subject is interesting and you do not necessarily have to attend lecture to get an A. |
| Jbarry12 Course: CLAS170 Grade Expected: B May 4, 2009, 9:26 am | She really isn't the best lecturer. The class is relatively easy, most of the readings are on Sparknotes and similar websites. You can easily get all the information from the websites, and write the 1-2 page paper due every week. I feel the exams were relatively straight forward. Go to discussion, and study well for the exams, and this is an easy class. |
| joepenn1 Course: CLAS170 Grade Expected: A May 1, 2009, 4:38 am | Stehle is an average teacher that in the end does know her stuff. Lectures are a good idea during the GReek Tragedy portions because she compares and contrasts stories but once the Epics are assigned class is entirely optional in my opinion. There is a 1-2 page paper due each week during discussion which IS mandatory, but they really are not that bad at all. If paper is completed adequately you get a "check". All checks on HW gives you an 85% avg. but just 2 "check +'s" or two very well done assignments will give you an A for HW. So work hard on a few and just complete the rest. Tests: In one word-Long. You will be writing quickly the entire 50 minutes for the hour exams and I'm almost certain she weeds out the A's form the B's on how quickly you can write down and remember the answers-aka how well you know the material. READ the questions carefully so you know what she's looking for but tests are easy if you do the reading. Take home message: If you do all the readings and keep the names/stories straight the entire class is a breeze. Tests are a bit lengthy however. Good HL |
| babygnau Course: CLAS170 Grade Expected: A- April 22, 2009, 3:32 pm | I personally thought Stehle was a horrible lecturer. The slides she posted up were worthless descriptions of the assigned reading material. If you read the books, there is no point in going to lecture and if you don't, the notes she gives you sure aren't going to help you out. What pissed me off on the exams was when I would lose a couple points on identification questions for not stating the exact info she wanted. I would right down an appropriate amount of information, but it is impossible to remember every freaking detail about every character you learn about. When this happens on 4 or 5 questions, it can needlessly bring your grade down a letter grade on the exam. Also, the papers due every week in class are only a page or two long, so they're not that bad. However you can only get a check, check minus or check plus. Only like one check plus gets handed out per discussion section, so it really decreases the need to work hard on these. Bad grading system. One good thing is that for the essay question on exams, she gives you 3 possible ones in class. One of these will be on the exam word for word the same, so there is no excuse for not knowing it. Overall, I found this class to be a nice break from my engineering classes I just didn't think Stehle was a good teacher. But there's no reason you can't get an A if you try. |
| Anonymous Course: CLAS170 Grade Expected: b- April 21, 2009, 7:14 am | teacher is terrible out of 6 classes im taking she is the only one i'm worried about. I hear mixed results with other TA's though. I can't stress this enough choose the right TA ( not erica) even if the answers are right on your exams she wont give you credit for them because they aren't want she wanted...You're kinda screwed into to taking this course bc its the easiest HL but make sure you get the right TA or you are going to regret it... |
| Anonymous Course: CLAS170 Grade Expected: B April 5, 2009, 6:02 pm | She is a good professor but the amount of work she assigns is insane! I felt like I was assigned 300-level work for a CORE class. I'm talking entire books to read for one lecture. I didn't go to lecture a lot which probably would have helped but I lucked out by cramming for exams. There is a paper due EVERY discussion so you have to attend and the TA's grade them hard. The TA's suck, especially mine! They are annoying and don't review for the exam at all! If you are looking for an easy way to fulfill your HL then DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! |
