| Anonymous Course: GEOL457 Grade Expected: B December 9, 2010, 10:39 pm | Dr. Montesi is a decent teacher. Sometimes the lectures went straight over my head. He spent the first 1/3 of the class (roughly) going over some intermediate mathematical concepts (like Fourier analysis, vector calculus, etc). I was lost somewhat during these lectures, despite having taking MATH240/246/etc, so I just read the lecture note packets he gave out to gain a reasonable understanding. He is helpful if you go to him. I always worked ont he homeworks alone, and as such, I'm sure my grades were lower than the class averages. This class is also offered as a graduate level course, so as an undergraduate I sat in class with graduate students. My workload was lighter than theirs. Overall, a decent lecturer, good sense of humor, and a passion for the subject. |
| punkmaniac05 Course: GEOL100 Grade Expected: B November 23, 2010, 8:20 am | Took this class without the lab. It is very boring and the lectures are torture. Almost half the class does not show up each time. He puts a password up halfway through the lecture to unlock the slides online. It is very annoying. Montesi is a nice enough guy, but his accent makes it kind of hard to understand, and his lectures are pretty boring. The field trip is awesome but is now only worth 5 points instead of 10 percent. The homeworks are all online but only allow three attempts. They just use Google Earth and can be easy. The exams are also all online, but are timed. I did not buy the book for this class and have skipped probably about half the lectures, maybe more. I got an 83 on the first exam and a 69 on the second. There is another one coming up and then the final. It probably is not a hard class if you get the book and pay attention to lecture, but it is very very difficult to care in this class. I do not know about the lab, but hearing people talk about it made it sound awful. I would definitely recommend taking a better class for core, this does not even fulfill a core for me, so it was a huge waste. |

Best 4 out of 5 grades used as 25% of total ( exam1, exam 2, final, top 5 HW [dont need to take final]) next top 5 HW)Homework was 50% of the grade and allowed unlimited attempts so was easy 100%, along with a 10% extra credit field trip. So you will only need about 40% on the exams (which were online) to get an A if this grading method stays up. He tries to make the lectures interesting as well and is very nice. |
