No quizzes, easy homeworks and matlab assignments, and straightforward exams.

MATH461 is a fairly easy class and Mellet is a laid back professor. Lectures are helpful but you can easily read the book and learn the material and still succeed in the class.

I suggest taking MATH461 as a upper level engineering elective.

I would absolutely take more classes with Dr. Mellet given the chance. He was extremely organized with our class, and followed the book pretty closely. However, if you attended lecture, you could learn pretty much everything there and did not have to rely on the book much at all. You will need it for the homework, though. He is not the type of teacher to throw a curveball on the test. He gives out practice exams, which are a pretty good indicator of what you will need to know. If you navigate his website, you can find his old course pages and find exams from previous years. If you do 2-3 sample exams for each test, you should have no problem. The homework assignments are time consuming, but are not usually very difficult. Matlab assignments are pretty easy as well, and if you just put the time into doing them, it should be a free 10% of your grade. He weights your lowest test as half of your other test grades. Overall, this course was easy, and he taught it very well. It's not a bad idea to take this and differential equations at the same time, since the end of the course is pretty similar in both.

He is an ok teacher. Homework is graded mostly on completion and the matlab assignments are easy. Mellet pretty much rewrites the book on the board, so you can find nearly all the notes and examples that he posts in the book. This was frustrating at times for me because if i had a hard time understanding the book, Mellet didnt help too much. The material was hard for me to understand, because it was very abstract. I didn't fully grasp many of the fundamental concepts until midway through the semester. But if you study hard and do all the example problems in the book, and you go to discussion and ask questions, you can succeed in this class. If you need an upper level math credit to take, this class with mellet is a good option.

Honestly, I didn't go to lecture that often since the material came straight out of the book. However, when I did go, lectures were informative and easy to follow along to. The exams he gave were very fair and straight forward. Overall, I would definitely recommend 461 with Mellet.

Professor Mellet did a great job teach Calc 3. His thoughts were clear and backed up by intuitive pictures. Furthermore, he taught by using lots of examples, which makes it much easier to understand what he's trying to do.

While my TA was good, it was mostly about hw problems and the hw quizzes. I didn't find discussion helpful since Mellet was good at teaching.

Matlab assignments were very easy. Most of them were copy and paste from the assignment. They were not nearly as confusing and obnoxious as many Matlab assignments tend to be.

His French accent is cool too.

Overall he is a good mathematics professor. The class is easy and his grading criteria is pretty straight forward. 3 tests, homework each week (time consuming and definitely not eco-frindly ... wasting a lot of paper) two homeworks are dropped. He has a cool French accent. I would certainly recommend him for ENEE461.

Mellet is pretty good as far as math professors go. He doesn't need a microphone, he talks to the class instead of the board, and he writes legibly.

MATH241 -- His grading policy is pretty awesome (he drops 3/9 quizzes and 2/6 Matlabs), and his tests are at the same difficulty of the examples from class and the textbook. Having a formula sheets for the tests just makes it easier.

MATH461 -- Relatively straight forward exams and once weekly homework. Not having quizzes makes it unnecessary to attend lecture except for tests and test reviews. The homework was pretty easy since the textbook is decent and I had a good TA.

If you find algebra intuitive, you can miss every lecture and do well in this class. However, Mellet made it quite enjoyable to be in lecture with his attractive accent and clear, organized lectures (he follows the book most of the time). Professor Mellet is really friendly and was excited to answer my questions unrelated to course material when I showed up at his office in the morning unannounced.

There are no quizzes in Mellet's 461, but the weekly homework questions were selected well to emphasize important skills. Tests (three total) were all straightforward, but graders may take off more points than you're used to for simple things like arithmetic errors in order to lower grades (not a big deal, but test averages are high in this class).

Overall, a highly enjoyable and easy class with a great teacher.

If you're like me, you basically want to know if you can skip class and just learn from the textbook. And the answer is yes. Can't say I have been to many of his classes, but from the ones that I did go to, he was following the book pretty closely. This class was much easier than calc 2- no webassigns, and matlabs are like once a week- maybe even less than that. And they're easy- he tells you what to type in. Quizzes and tests are closely modeled from the book. He lets you bring a cheat sheet on tests. I wouldn't know how good of a lecturer he is, he seemed okay. My friends in the class liked him though. He posts what he's going over in class online and when stuff is due, so you know what days to go to class and to turn stuff in.

Can't say I was thrilled with his teaching style, but he is decent. The class is pretty easy overall. Just be sure to do the homework and read the book for the online quizzes.

"You take ze z-zeero"...Yes, Dr. Mellet has an accent, but it doesn't really make him difficult to understand at all. In my opinion, it made the class slightly more enjoyable. I have had professors with worse accents. Additionally, Dr. Mellet does a more than satisfactory job explaining material thoroughly, working examples, and addressing questions.

Some positives: Homeworks are posted online, the material never strays from the book, and his exams never have anything on them that is unfamiliar. If you do the homeworks, you can ace the exams. Going to class is probably superfluous.

Some negatives: If you're looking for exciting and rigorous academic challenge (I hear that's what college students are looking for these days), then stay away. Don't expect class to be anything more than an extension of the textbook.

I loved his class and teaching style. He is very honest to the syllabus and covered everything in good detail. I would sometimes his lectures could get a bit monotonous, but i had a great TA,so if i wasn't paying attention in lecture, i would make it up in discussion. I think three quizzes a week and a homework every week is a bit too much, but if u don't read book regularly, this course material can be pretty hard. so in a way, all the exercises were helpful, albeit a bit painful.
Mellet is strongly recommended. He wants students to learn and will help you in any way.

Not amazing, but definitely good enough.

Stuck to the book 100%, which gives students who are not math-saavy to hear two different perspectives on the material, and gives students who ARE math-saavy the freedom to just skip class and read the book, which is great.
Exams were very easy and very straightforward, no curveballs whatsoever.

Has a very thick accent but you'll get over it after about 2 class periods.
There is a quiz before every class period, but if you take the time to actually open your textbook, there is no reason why you should not end up with a near-perfect score in the end.

Great teacher, though he did not stray from the book at all, which may have limited his overall usefulness.

Daily quizzes annoying.

He has a noticeable accent, but I find it fun to listen to, not detrimental to my understanding at all. He is also very approachable.

Decent professor, somewhat hard to understand and teaches straight from Lay's syllabus. Pretty easy class overall though.

I didnt find Dr. Mellet's style of teaching very helpful, and his thick french accent made it worse. He taught straight from the book. His exams weren't too hard, and overall he's a nice guy. It also depends on what TA you get. Overall it wasnt too difficult to get an A as long as you do the homework and understand the material.

He is such a charming professor. Love his soft smile and French accent. Actually this course is pretty easy. You can just study for it by reading the textbook. But going to his class is a really nice thing.

Great professor - the class he taught was difficult and came with a difficult book, but for what we came with he gave out great notes and was easy to understand.

This professor was awful. I went into his office hours to get help from him and he didn't explain anything. He clearly knows his stuff, but he cannot teach. I absolutely do not recommend him.
