If your taking CCJS350

Easy to get an A

but MAKE SURE YOU REVIEW BEFORE A TEST!

It is very important to study for this class as doing poorly on one exam will really hurt your final grade. That's not to say the tests are hard because they are actually straight forward and easy but you should review before them. I mistakenly did poorly on first exam and despite getting 100% on quizzes and very well on next two exams I had to settle with a B.

Professor is easy to follow and great at telling stories and getting students to connect things together on their own. Made class very interesting.

Would definitely reccommend professor and class.

Your grade depends on three 50 question multiple choice exams, the highest ten out of twelve in class quizzes (which get easier as the semester progresses) and an extra credit opportunity.

As mentioned by other reviewers, Horner isn't the most engaging lecturer, however I still enjoyed the class - he brings in experiences that his wife has shared with him as a teacher and his own experience in corrections.

Lectures are done off powerpoint, where most of the material is already recorded on the slides. The book isn't absolutely necessary, but it is still a good resource, particularly for the first exam which was all on theories (since I don't particularly like theories).

Some of the early material is based off of (if not straight from) CCJS100 and CCJS105 - so it should look familiar.

The exams are meant to be noncumulative, however, the final had a small handful of few questions pop up from previous exams - so be careful. The questions on all the exams were very straightforward, however, including those repeat questions on the final. So you either knew it, or you didn't.

Finally, other reviewers have made it seem like it's very difficult to get an "A." It isn't. Attend lecture, study those notes from lecture, clarify anything with the text if necessary and you can get an A or at least an A- with no problem.

Lectures are extremely boring, but he is a great guy. Class is essentially impossible to get an A in thou, out of 180 points allowing you to only miss 19 points all semester (3 50 point tests, and 10 open book quizzes). No need to buy the textbook.

VERY INTERESTING CLASS! I never wanted to skip it. This class has made me want to work with at-risk and delinquent youth as a career. If you're interested in how gender, schools, peers, family, etc. relate to delinquency, I would definitely recommend that you take this class with Horner. Although we talk about the juvenile justice system towards the very end of the course, the class mainly focuses on theories of delinquent behavior. If you are more interested in the juvenile and criminal justice systems, I would recommend taking CCJS100 and any other course that requires CCJS100 as a pre-requisite.

It's a little of hard to get an A. The reason it is hard is becuase of the way the class is graded, not because the class is hard. The class is out of 180 points. If you lose more than 18 points, you are at a B. I lost 19 points and ended up with a B+. It's pretty insulting since I know the material so well that I could probably teach the class myself. I got a perfect score on all the quizzes (open note) and an A on exams 2 and 3. However, the 1st exam screwed me over and I got a C on it. The first exam is always the hardest because you don't know what to expect.

Also, don't be fooled by the "extra credit." It's not really extra credit. Basically, there are 12 quizzes, each worth 3 points. The MAXIMUM amount of points you can get on the quizzes is 30 points. Therefore, you can miss 2 quizzes. The extra credit is only for those who miss more than 2 quizzes and haven't made it to the 30 point mark. Pretty dumb in my opinion.

Overall, I would recommend this class because of the interesting material. However, make sure your grades are correct. The TA and Horner made mistakes in grading exams (which are scantron) and quizzes a couple of times.

It's easy to get a B in the class but you need to study a bit harder for that A.

No need to buy the book because he teaches and tests off of his powerpoints. Class was broken down into three exams and random quizzes (you need to take 10 but there are 12 leaving you to be able to miss 2). The quizzes are open note.

Professor Horner is a smart old man, but class can be boring at times

Boring, but his class is easy. Not very helpful when there was a problem though.
