I actually really liked this course. To be honest, when I was taking this class during Fall 2011, I really didn't like it and thought it was a useless course. However, I actually got A+'s on every single test and paper. I also liked the class even though I hate art and have never taken an art class before. You learn a lot about African culture and I really thought Professor Hill was great and really loves her job. I ended up getting an A+ in the class and I never took any notes from the book or read a single article, I just went to the lectures.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Extremely difficult to memorize AFRICAN words and images. WAY too hard for a simple art credit. STAY AWAY if you can. The teacher thinks african art is the most important thing in the world. IT WILL NOT HELP YOU IN ANYWAY AND IT WILL ONLY HURT YOUR GRADE.

This class is horrible. She randomly uses a lot of words in an African language, and you have to memorize every thing there is about pictures and pieces of art. its awful. and on the tests you have 2 minutes to identify each piece of art and tehn like 5 minutes to write an essay. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.

The class could have been ok had it not been for the exams. Exams are meant to test your knowledge of the material but with her exams she puts up these things called attributions when you have to look at a piece of art not shown or discussed in class and then try and guess who the artist is. This seems like it could be easy but they were not. I'm thinking she might make them easier for future classes as I'm sure she got many complaints from students in my class. Another part of the tests that seem pointless in the long run were the naming of the pieces and the artists to match the piece shown on the exam. Again this would not have proven to be difficult had she discussed the artist. Point blank she usually puts things on the test that you don't think are important so in short, if you take this class, MEMORIZE EVERYTHING! No multiple choice. The TA I had, Ms. Bratton, was helpful but the other ones seemed like they wanted to be the professor and were hard ass like her.
