Reviews for Sandra Hadler
Average Rating:| Anonymous Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: A- June 13, 2011, 9:35 pm | No thanks to Hadler, I pulled off an A. Class is a waste of time. Instead of teaching, she tries to involve the class and ask questions about topics that hardly ever prepare you to take her exams. Most people did really bad on the first exam, but after learning that the professor didn't teach, people did more reading and improved on exam #2. If you want an A, read the book and understand the concepts. I wouldn't say it was very difficult, although I would have had an A- if not for the massive curve, which bumped me up to an A+. There was a massive curve on the final so don't worry if you have a low exam grade. Try to avoid this class if you can - learning from the book sucks. |
| Anonymous Course: ECON317 Grade Expected: A June 1, 2011, 12:16 pm | If you are an intellectual students who loves classes in which you get to have intellectual back and forth conversations was an incredibly experienced and knowledgeable professor who doesn't care about the forced teacher student wall, then ignore all the horrible comments that Hadler has received before this. She may not be good for lower levels, but she was the best econ professor I have ever had in my life. She treated me like an adult, challenged me when I was wrong, and welcomed me to do the same to her. She realizes that the book material must be covered, and makes her exams straight from the book, just read it, its worthwhile anyway if youre an econ major and not long. Her final repeats questions from midterms. It is such a shame that she has gotten all these bad reviews from previous students who just didn't get her because she was different. If you are sick of the same old boring teacher, take Hadler. She was the best. |
| Anonymous Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: C April 28, 2011, 3:05 pm | This class was awful. She 'lectures' by reading straight off the slides and moved too quickly for you to write anything down. There is no small discussion section (you're all in the same section) so you're basically on your own to learn because you will fall asleep in 1.5 hour class. Had myeconlab due every week which is the best way to study for exams. Basically, try to avoid her at all costs, this course was awful, I just got the point where I stopped going to class and just taught myself with some tutoring. Wish I had dropped-do not take it with her!!! |
| Anonymous Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: February 9, 2011, 2:47 pm | Hadler is a fucking joke. Attending her lecture is like getting a steel rod shoved through your eye socket - shit is just straight up painful. However, like someone else on here said, if you're the type of kid who likes to skip class and learn the material on your own, she might just be the perfect teacher for you. Her lack of ability to do anything other than make you want to blow your own head off pretty much morally permits you to skip every single class. |
| Anonymous Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: February 7, 2011, 11:42 am | Pros: British accent Cons: Can't teach Can't talk Stutters Weird pants Bottom line: I hope she chokes on a scone |
| Anonymous Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: January 21, 2011, 3:18 pm | WORSE PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD! She cannot teach, and I think she may be partially retarded with a dash of rude. You cant rely on lecture to learn, so whats the point in going. I don't understand why she is a professor at the University of Maryland. She is a blemish to the Economics department, the school should be embarrassed to have her. She is rude, and stupid. She doesn't even deserve the one star that I am required to give her. I can't for the life of me figure out who the hell gave this woman a degree, let alone 3 to get a Ph.D. Oh and the TAs didn't do anything. So don't look to them for help. Do not take her class. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS |
| Anonymous Course: ECON317 Grade Expected: A+ December 21, 2010, 2:03 pm | Bottom line, Hadler can't teach. But in all fairness, while she isn't a spoon-feeding professor, she does a good job of inciting discussion and engaging her students in lectures. The only way for you to ace this class is to self-study and read the textbook EXTREMELY CLOSELY! She only skims the surface in class. She takes slides given to her by the publisher and flips through them so fast so you can't really catch anything. But when she does try to explain a concept, she stumbles on her own words and sometimes simply gives up. There is a great amount of material to cover for this course, and the only way to ace the exams is to read the textbook very closely. I had to read each chapter 3 times and take notes 2 out of the 3 times in order to fully digest the material. My exam scores were around the 90s whereas the class average was in the 70s. Just going to lecture isn't enough, as the exam questions come from the publisher and could be very detailed sometimes, so you literally have to memorize every line in the textbook if you want an A. The breakdown of the course is as follows: group paper (15%), country position paper(15%), 2 midterms(20% each), and a final (30%) The group papers are written on current issues and each week one group presents their paper. Now, this is the part where Hadler actually shows her knowledge and expertise. Through her comments, you can sense Hadler gained a lot of experience working for the World Bank. Also be careful of the answers given by Hadler, as sometimes she doesnât know at all what sheâs talking about. For example, after the first midterm, we went over the answers, and some of the answers she gave were actually wrong. Donât give Hadler the benefit of your doubt. Second guess everything. This is actually the part that irked me that most. The class didnât even have the right to access the correct answers. WHAT?! Go to her office hour and ask to see your scantron personally to see what you got wrong. The answer key used to grade the scantrons is correct, her answers in class are wrong(she does the question on the spot). The final was a little bit more manageable. At least half of the questions came word-for-word from the midterms. Overall, if youâre willing to self-study this course isnât too bad, just tedious because of the amount of information you must memorize. But in the end I learned so much. I would recommend anyone else teaching 317 over Hadler, as Hadler is truly the worst professor anyone could encounter. |
| Anonymous Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: A December 20, 2010, 12:34 pm | The class is easy, but Hadler is so incompetent it takes a little work. Never in my life have I had such a horrible teacher who didnt even know how to use the microphone connected to her speaker system. Her incompetence is forgivable since you can get by with just reading the book, BUT her lack of concern for students is just outrageous. People like her should not be allowed to teach students. |
| Anonymous Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: A December 16, 2010, 10:51 pm | If you are the kind of person that prefers classes that you never have to attend except for the exams, this is the professor for you. There are myeconlabs due every week online, 2 midterms, and the final. I went to class 3 times. It is an online class. I would actually recommend this professor because she makes lecture so worthless you SHOULD NEVER GO. |
| Anonymous Course: ECON317 Grade Expected: December 16, 2010, 1:21 pm | Dr. Hadler is very knowledgeable, but is not effective at teaching. Besdies her ability to get the class engaged every so often, her lectures don't prepare students for exams. She seems very unprepared for each class as she can not remember what information has been covered, breezes through her slides like they are not important, and often times is late. Thus, You must read the book word for word multiple times because the exams pull out little details rather than focus on the main ideas discussed in lecture. Furthermore, Dr. Hadler is far from approachable. Should you feel the need to go to her office hours, go in the middle of the the time slot, otherwise she will tell you she doesn't have time to address your concerns/questions; More times than not she comes off as very rude. Overall, I would say the class is doable and it is quite interesting, but I would advise not taking it with Dr. Hadler. |
| Anonymous Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: A December 14, 2010, 2:52 pm | Hadler sucks. I mean, she is god awful. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING that has been said by the recent posts is true about her. There is no point in saying it again. Although not my worst professor (I've had some bad ones), she would definitely be in the top three worst of my life. Probably number two. She is honestly awful. Read everything below me. All the bad comments are on point. Any good comments, and I mean ANY, are wrong. And this isn't coming from a bitter student going to get a 'C'. I'm going to get an 'A'. Just with no help whatsoever from the professor. Welcome to college folks. |
| Anonymous Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: December 9, 2010, 2:18 pm | She is by far the most incompetent and horrible professor I have ever encountered and most likely ever will have. She is incapable of speaking basic English, and pauses in between every couple of sentences, which makes her extraordinarily hard to follow. Going to lecture is completely pointless, except she gave extra credit points occasionally for going. However, all she does is read of slides that the publisher provided for her and reads verbatim off of them. Her tests are fairly easy and come from questions that the publisher has given her. However, when she went to go over questions from the test, she literally said 'I cannot do problems standing up I need to sit down' and shouted at her TA to do them. Let me say that again, she was not capable of answering her own test problem. She also showed up 10 minutes late to both of her exams, and was flickering lights and music for the first 20 minutes because she did not know how to operate the classroom projector. Her exams also had multiple mistakes on them, of which she did not know existed until we did them in class. When you ask her a question in class, she gets very annoyed at you and yells at you, and if you email her, all she does is say refer to the syllabus and accuse you of not going to lecture. She is by far the most professor at this university and it is likely she received her degree from the bottom of a cereal box. Normally on OURUMD, when people say avoid, they are simply mad at the professor for their grade. However, I am perfectly content with my grade in the class and am advising to everyone reading this to NEVER take ECON201 with Hadler. |
| Anonymous Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: A- December 9, 2010, 12:14 pm | If there were a rating of 0, Hadler would be a prime candidate. She is without a doubt the worst professor that I have ever had, and most likely will ever have. Her approach to teaching, disrespect for her students and TAs, and inability to even begin to adequately teach the material to her students, make her not even remotely qualified to teach a college course of any kind. When asked how to solve somewhat difficult problems, she either ignored the request or attempted and miserably failed...to quote her, "I can only solve these problems sitting down"... She frequently showed up late for lecture, which is only useful to attend for copying down the lecture notes (although she speeds through the notes, making them impossible to copy down), and showed up late for both mid-term exams. After showing up over 5 minutes late for the first exam, she moved at a snail's pace to administer the exam and then in an attempt to dim the lights she completely turned them off for well over a minute while somehow seeming amused at her own incompetence. Yet she outdid herself during the second exam when she not only showed up late, but purposefully played music for about a minute before we were allowed to begin the exam (all while the lights were mysteriously dimmed...again). I honestly believe that no one should have to take this class. Attending lecture was a waste of time and Hadler was less than accommodating to her student's concerns. We didn't go over the exams until the last two days of class, when it was revealed that there were multiple choice questions that didn't even have the correct answer as an option. Hadler then had to be twisted by the arm by students in lecture to give everyone credit for the problem..even though it was obviously her fault for including a faulty question on the exam. I had to spend hours studying on my own to learn the material for this class (which by no means is extremely difficult) because I learned next to nothing valuable in class. Hardly anyone attends lecture, because it is useless. Please, if you can, avoid taking ECON201 with Hadler...you won't regret it. |
| Anonymous Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: B December 8, 2010, 11:46 am | The professor is horrible. I had read reviews going into this class that said she was bad but I had read that for a few others and they turned out great so I thought I'd give her a shot. Bad idea! The worst teacher I have ever had! She doesn't seem to really understand the material and she reads straight off her slides which are sometimes incorrect by HER OWN admittance! Multiple times throughout the semester she told us that she could be wrong, just read the textbook to get the right answers. She continued to have microphone problems that took up the first 10 min of class every time. She was hard to hear for most students even though I sat in the 5th row. She tried to explain concepts but got confused and said she didn't know what she was talking about. She continuously related everything to Britain and the British pound currency, this is of course because she's British and has a strong old lady British accent. She refused to give us our exams back so we just had to look up the results on ELMS and couldn't argue whether or not our grades were correct. Overall, if there's another professor available, take them because although this is a good class in general, the professor is downright awful and that's being generous. |
| jhmaple1 Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: C December 5, 2010, 11:52 am | Professor: Hadler doesn't 'teach' like the others professors do. In my opinion, she instead discusses the material as if you were just a random person on the street or on the bus talking about the economy. She has powerpoints but rarely uses it because most of the time she discusses, like I said before, and whizzes through multiple slides as if they were not important. When she skips them, they are clearly important. Why would they be in the powerpoint anyway? She shows up just in time for class which to me, doesn't give off a 'I want to be here' vibe. Overall seems like a nice lady/professor, but doesn't engage very well. Grades/Exams: So far there have been 2 exams, each of which haven't been too hard. Reading the book is a must if you take this class because once again, she doesn't teach. The exams are not curved as well. There are online homeworks and quizzes for each chapter. Each chapter has 1 hwk and 1 quiz; you must get an 80% or higher to have access to the quiz, which is the graded portion. The homework is repeatable so 80% is nothing. You have 2 tries on each quiz and some of the quiz questions are similar to the homework questions. Also, the exams might have some of the homework/quiz questions. I remember on the 1st exam, they had a few but on the 2nd exam, I noticed less. Nonetheless, free points if you do the homework/quizzes thoroughly, right? The lowest 3 quiz grades will be dropped, so 9 out of 12 are counted/graded. Grade distribution is out of 430 points, 100 each for exam/midterms, 140 for final, 90 for online quiz grades. Discussions are not mandatory. Daily class life: Went to the first couple of lectures until I figured out how each class would be. So I stopped going to class and just kept up with the readings instead. To me, this works and I'm doing okay in the class. Of course I fell behind just a little bit, so I have some readings to catch up on before the exam. Overall impression: Try not to take it with Hadler. I only did because I had another commitment which could not be avoided and only her timeslot would work for me. Wishes she could engage in the material a bit better. Also, it could be me and not being used to her teaching style. P.S. If you're going to get the 8th edition book, be sure to read the title of the chapter. Later on in the course, the chapter numbers don't match up. I personally just matched the titles and sections up with someone who had a 9th edition book. |
| Kevin Garcia Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: B November 22, 2010, 10:11 pm | Obscenely boring. There's honestly no point in going to lecture, considering you read the book instead. Her lectures consist of reciting what's in the book, while injecting as many tangents as possible. Also doesn't post lectures online. Exams are simple if you read and understand the book. Avoid her. |
| Anonymous Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: B November 21, 2010, 9:13 am | She is without a doubt the absolute WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!! She puts no effort into trying to help you with questions you may have, she doesn't post lecture slides (even though she just uses the ones from the book and is too lazy to make her own that might actually be useful), and has such an unclear and erratic style of teaching that any pretense of learning is gone the second you walk into class. ECON 201 can be an interesting course, but she makes it just god awful. Whatever you do, don't take her. |
| Anonymous Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: C+ November 15, 2010, 7:10 pm | I agree with everything said about her being a terrible lecturer and how the class is terrible. Expecting straight A's and a C in this class this semester. |
| rmcelroy Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: B- November 14, 2010, 6:14 pm | Probably the worst professor I've had in college. I agree wholeheartedly with everything previously posted, except for the one that claims she's smart. What she is is extremely lazy. Shows up to campus only two days a week (the days of her lectures), which makes her totally unapproachable except right after class. She will not adequately answer any question that you pose to her about the material, though, so don't bother. Her lecture slides are provided by the textbook company, as are the homework assignments (and I think the test questions too). Her lectures are the most boring I've ever experienced. She puts no time into the class and it shows. If it is at all possible to avoid her class, please do so. *Important note* This class is NOT curved. She expects the class average to be in the 70's. Not surprising, since she doesn't prepare the students at all for the test and provides no studying materials. |
| Anonymous Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: C October 27, 2010, 5:34 pm | Terrible professor, cant answer questions asked in class. Doesn't resolve problems when emailed, just tells you to talk to the TA. Doesn't teach during class the stuff that you will be tested on. The class is aware of this and it shows as a lecture of over 200 people by the 6th week of class literally only 20 people are showing up. She is an audio version of the text, with out formulas so you're better off reading. Over all thee WORST prof. I've had in my education at any university, college, and high school. |
| nman13 Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: B May 25, 2010, 11:16 am | Horrible professor!! Doesn't know how to teach at all is very boring in class. I never went to lecture after the first month and got a B. agree with everything the person before posted. |
| Anonymous Course: ECON317 Grade Expected: May 23, 2010, 2:13 pm | I agree that Dr. Hadler is extremely knowledgable and she is very easy to approach. Her lectures are extremely boring, however. As another reviewer has said, she writes verbatim what is in the textbook. There is almost no point in attending class because everything she says is in our book. She also often skipped through a lot of slides very quickly-too quick to actually absorb anything she had said. In addition, her quizzes, midterm, and final exam were all multiple choice. The good thing about the final was that she reused many of the old questions she had previously used in the semester. The bad part about these examinations was that she often asked about information that was written in 1 or 2 lines of a chapter. Sometimes I felt we were not tested on the main concepts which became irritating after some point because there was absolutely no way to memorize each chapter that was like 30 pages long. Our quiz averages were around 50%, probably due to the nature of the questions. I still received an A in the class because I studied. She probably curved the class as well as the quizzes. If there is another professor teaching global economic policies, I would recommend them over Dr. Hadler. |
| Anonymous Course: ECON201 Grade Expected: B+ April 13, 2010, 9:53 pm | She's a smart person and obviously knows what she's talking about, but her lectures are just abysmal. She uses the powerpoints that the book publisher gives her, which means that her lectures are pretty much verbatim from the text. One myeconlab assignment per week, two mid terms, and a final. Not terribly difficult, if you do the reading you really don't need to bother with lectures. |
