Reviews for Howard Frank
Average Rating:| Anonymous Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: B+ January 24, 2012, 9:02 pm | This is along the lines of what everyone else said. However, it should come to your attention, since this is a core business school course, the required GPA that the professor needs to submit for his course is a 2.8. So if you ended up getting a 90% or higher in the class but say maybe that you werent in the top 20% of those A's, then your grade became a B+, like mine did. Same comments from me as everyone else, just wanted to point out that on paper and in person it is an "easy A," however the 2.8 GPA grading curve that the professor needs to have every semester will not be nice to some people who get 91s or 92s in the class. |
| Anonymous Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: A December 24, 2011, 8:00 am | Howard, howard, howard. Lets start it off by saying he is a rich, pompous, old, rich, entreprenuar who owns 6 jaguars and has never been to walmart. He is seriously really cocky and is a pretty bad lecturer. THe only reason i took this class was because i wanted an easy A for CORE. If you go to all the classes you get 10 Extra credit, which makes it hard not to get an A. THe class itself is alot of copmmon sense. I did not read or study for any of the quizzes (he has 5 of them, like exams) except the final and i got low Bs on them. On the last two quizzes i actually read and studied and got an A on both. THis class is really easy and was a much needed break from my science classes, but i won't lie there were a few interesting points in lecture, but they were very few and far in between. I only gave this class a 4 star rating because of the the 10% extra credit. Easy A. If you don't get at least a B, i don't know why your in college (seriously its that easy). |
| Pinkk Bbubbles Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: A December 22, 2011, 9:48 am | He is a great professor, it is not the most exciting class but ill rather have an Okay class with a nice professor than the other way around. My only recommendation is study for pop quizzes and you will get an A since he gives extra credits for attendance. easy A.and nice professor, and so what he is rich. I love to be surrounded by successful and wealthy people, and I love to listen to their stories and their accomplishments. Their success is only more fuel on my fire to build my empire. so, people don't get annoyed by his storied get INSPIRED!!!!!! |
| defeatthehuns Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: A December 16, 2011, 8:31 pm | If you do what you're supposed to do, and read the book before the quizzes, this class is very easy. I am a Neuro/Phys major who took this class to fulfill a CORE IE course, but this was one of the most interesting and enlightening courses I have taken here at UMD so far. I really enjoyed Dr. Frank's stories about his own experiences and he himself is an example of a successful man who has many years of experience living in the business world and it shows in the way he teaches the class. It was because of this class that I'm really considering taking more classes in the business school even though I don't need to. Yes, some of the lectures are boring, but one day when he sensed us getting bored, so he let us out of class an hour early. An example of why he is awesome. Hahaha. |
| Anonymous Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: B December 6, 2011, 1:59 pm | At first glance, you think, damn this guy is old this class is going to be a breeze. FALSE. One of the worst professors I've had at UMD. He is a rich, pompous old man who is good at running a business but not teaching a class full of students. He is boring and he doesn't teach, just skims through slides. DON'T TRY TO LEAVE OR THE TA WILL RUN AFTER YOU. Literally, the TA (Mody) will leave the class trying to hunt you down which is more disruptive then you leaving in the first place. I regret taking this class. You will too. The only saving grace is that there is extra credit based attendance which can help your grade, which will be awful due to Frank's quizzes. Don't take it unless you have to |
| Erik Hammel Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: A June 13, 2011, 9:44 pm | Go to every class and read the book - that's the key to success in this class. Frank is smart and he certainly knows how to run a business but he's not the best professor. Unless you like hearing stories told in a monotonous tone every day then you will fall asleep in class at least once. Going to every class earns you 10% extra credit, making it an easy class to ace. Finding things to do in class can be difficult. I memorized all the state capitals among other things. Overall, if you want an easy A, then take this class, but if you don't want the hassle of memorizing arcane business vocab, you might want to choose differently. |
| Anonymous Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: A December 31, 2010, 7:16 am | Professor Frank is a really good teacher. He has years of experience with business and will help you with any problems. He's available to meet for office hours. The class is difficult at times, but if you skim the book and just review the slide shows he has you should get an A. One thing that helps for this class is to find someone to study with so if you don't understand a concept you have someone to help. Also if you just go to the lecture and have less than 3 absences you get 10% added to your grade at the end of the semester. So you're pretty much guaranteed an A if you spend a little time actually trying. |
| Anonymous Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: A+ December 27, 2010, 4:53 pm | Class is very boring, he just repeats what's said in the book. The book publisher releases Powerpoint slides which highlight the exact same things the textbook does. The only reason to go to class is for the attendance points, which are very hepful. Just red the book and ull get an A |
| Anonymous Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: a December 17, 2010, 3:17 am | i enjoyed his class although it was a bit boring to sit through the lectures. he often would end class early. attendance is not mandatory however, you get extra credit for going. if you miss no more than 3 classes you get an extra 10% to your final grade in the class. honestly go to class and do good on the quizzes. Quizzes are 40 mc and if you actually study you can get at least an 80. Definitely would recommend taking his class. |
| Anonymous Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: A December 14, 2010, 6:39 pm | I do not understand how this man receives bad reviews. If your not interested in business than don't take this class. In the past it was evident that the average grade was low which was why this semester (fall 10) he added a 10% extra credit policy if you miss 3 classes or fewer. If you understand what im saying..all you really need is a B- to get an A-. Granted I have high interests in business, this class should be an easy A (starting this semester) for anyone who decides to take it. There are 7 quizzes- 40 mc questions each, and the lowest one gets dropped. Frank posts practice questions on blackboard for each chapter as well as a practice quiz for each one. Not some, but MANY questions are taken directly from the practice questions/quiz. My final is in a few days, but I need a very low grade to receive an A. In my opinion, Professor Frank is as fair as any Professor could possibly be, and I definitely recommend this class to anyone who is somewhat interested in business..or can bear the topic to receive an easy A (If you dont get an A your not a bright kid, or just dont care) |
| Anonymous Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: A December 6, 2010, 2:27 pm | If he didn't make attendance a 10% extra credit in the final grade, there probably would be no one in his lectures. He copies the book in his powerpoint slides, so it really is pointless to go to class when you have the book to read back home. Frank is obviously a rich and successful businessman, being the former dean, he definitely contributed a lot to the business school, but he isn't a very good teacher in terms of teaching his knowledge of business to the students. Lectures just get boring. Reading the book and going over his previous tests (posted on ELmS) are the key to ace his tests. |
| Tikiwillson Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: A July 24, 2010, 11:19 am | Prof Frank is the bomb. I thought his class, and lectures were awesome. If you're truly interested in business, you'll like his class. The lectures are interesting and the quizzes were mainly definition based, and straight out of the text. I loved this class. |
| Anonymous Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: B+ May 2, 2010, 12:34 am | The name for this class should be "Try to scare you out of applying to the business school"110. Frank and his GA attempt to intimidate you on the first few lectures about how hard the class will be and how it's going to be your most difficult class. As long as you read the chapters in the text and review the sample exams they post online you should do fine. Lectures are boring but attendance is mandatory so you have to go. |
| Anonymous Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: A May 1, 2010, 11:16 am | Great professor, a lot of fun to listen to if you actually care about business. The quizzes were not that hard, as others have said. They were all based on the material and there were numerous practice quizzes posted for each and every quiz. Some of the actual quizzes included questions directly from the practice quizzes. Prof Frank is successful and he likes to tell about his life in business. Lectures were sometimes hard to sit through but really only if you were in the class for an easy A and don't actually care about business. He asks for the class's opinions on quizzes and what they liked and didn't. He even went as far as to move a quiz ahead a class because several students were complaining about having a quiz the day after the Duke game. Pay attention to this guy, he knows what he's talking about. |
| Anonymous Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: A April 20, 2010, 11:38 am | Prof Frank is very successful, and he makes sure to tell you about this during every lecture. The quizzes made up by Olga, the GA, are very hard and impossible to study for. The lectures are extremely boring, but you have to go since he takes attendance. |
| Anonymous Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: B December 18, 2009, 8:55 pm | He is very successful, making him knowledgeable about business! However, lectures were extremely boring and the quizzes did not accuarately test your understanding of the material. They were multiple choice and true and false, but didn't test the major concepts of the book, but instead the ONE line of text that didn't really matter! This was his first time teaching the course thought and he was very open to recommendations in making the course better. |
| Anonymous Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: December 17, 2009, 7:40 pm | I just think that its ridiculous that the final consists of studying the entire book. Professor Frank is a very nice man, and really successful (with his Jags), but his teaching skills aren't so good. And Olga, his teaching assistant, or whatever you want to call her, made really hard computer-generated quizzes that she probably wouldn't have a chance at passing either if she tried. Class was a JOKE, and you probably could do better if you didn't take the time to go. But they know that you wouldn't go, so they took attendance every class.. Shitty. Overall, I learned a lot of the basics about business, but I could have done this without wasting my time in class. really. |
| Anonymous Course: BMGT110 Grade Expected: B December 15, 2009, 4:17 pm | Professor Frank is a very successful businessman and brought the business school into the national spotlight as the dean. That being said, he is not a very good teacher. His lectures were hard to sit through. The first few quizzes were hard, but he finally understood he needed to make them easier and he did so. In the end, he was very responsive to student needs, but could not teach very well. |
