Reviews for Verlyn B. Flieger
Average Rating:| Anonymous Course: HONR208E Grade Expected: A- April 29, 2009, 8:39 am | Dr. Flieger is a great professor! She's really knowledgeable about Tokien and his works. Just as a note, if you take HONR208E, you'll have a LOT of reading to do, and have to buy lots of books. If you go to class and participate, she'll think better of you and probably grade you slightly easier. TAKE GOOD NOTES during the discussion, and participate a lot, and you'll do well. (and definitely don't skip) A lot of professors don't mean to, but they have that subconscious bias. |
| jessgord Course: HONR208E Grade Expected: B+ November 14, 2008, 7:54 pm | She was a WONDERFUL professor. She's a scholar in the field and could answer any question you might have about Tolkien's life. She's also such a nice old lady and you get to hear her say the word "fuck" a few times throughout the semester, which is great. It was a pleasure to learn from her. A lot of reading, but her analysis and explanations are so interesting and worth it. Take plenty of notes because the exams are open-note essays. |
| xinio64 Course: HONR208E Grade Expected: A January 6, 2008, 8:28 pm | Amazing teacher, amazing class. One of the best honors seminars in the university honors program. She's done an excellent job teaching this course and I learned so much from her. This is a fun class and the reading is fun too. It may be a lot but you will LOVE it. However, I'm biased because I love Lord of the Rings. But take the class anyway!!!!! |
| Myanus Course: HONR208E Grade Expected: B December 3, 2007, 11:26 am | Verlyn Flieger's honors seminar is a fascinating look into the life and works of J.R.R. Tolkien. If you like the Lord of the Rings, this is the class for you. There are many books you have to buy for this course, as she goes over many of Tolkien's earlier works and influences before diving into the Lord of the Rings as a culminating study. She is passionate about her topic, respected in her field, and entertaining; possibly the coolest old lady on campus (she always wears matching earrings and necklace, I'm beginning to wonder how many sets she has). You must be prepared to read, and read lots, as the grades are entirely exams. These exams are essays on the themes and topics explored in the various books read. She takes attendance, but the class is very engaging so most people attend every discussion. |
