This class was different than most other classes I've had, except for ENGL 101, in the fact that it was run more of a discussion, rather than a lecture. Students were encouraged to participate, and it was a big factor in your grade. We also did lots of small group work (sometimes collected!) and a couple presentations as well! Overall, the class wasn't too bad, though. Homework assignments consisted of reading the books, submitting 10 discussion postings via ELMS (throughout the semester), two short papers, one slightly longer paper, a midterm exam, a final (both of these exams were just essays, although you were able to choose 4 out of 7 (or 3 out of 6 or something), so it made it easier) and participation. The workload was a bit tough/unbalanced in the beginning of the year, but it progressed as the semester went along. In fact, we essentially had the last two weeks of classes off because we finished early (she just met with us each individually to discuss any concerns we had). Personally, I also felt more comfortable in participating as the semester went along! The books weren't too bad, but they were all very different, so you're bound to like some and not others-the big theme of the class is "postcolonialism."
In short, take this class if you like discussion based classes. Like the other reviewer said, the professor can be a little tough to understand, and it can be a bit challenging to anticipate what the class discussions will about/where they are going sometimes, but she isn't a tough grader. It could be a bit of a challenge to get an A in the class, but you should have no problem with definitely getting at least a B. I took this class solely for a core credit (it's HL and D), and I'm glad I did, because it was definitely worth the time.
Best of luck with the class!

This professor is okay, sometimes hard to understand because she is quiet and has an accent. The books got more interesting after the first month and class discussions got heated sometimes. This class was decent and only had 3 short papers and no homework or quizzes. Most of the grade is dependent on the midterm/final and class participation, but thorough reading isn't imperative.
