She'll smile in your face and then f--- you in the a-- "Students who complain are lazy and not willing to work or pissed off because they actually have to think." Screw you. How dare you call me lazy. I put everything I have into every class I take. This class had a RIDICULOUS amount of work. And it wasn't about "thinking". It was totally 100% busy work. "The class is hard, but we were warned at the beginning and it's way easier this semester than last semesters workload." I don't see how warning us that there will be lots of work makes it ok to assign an unfair amount of work for a 2 credit class. For all the work we did in this class, it should have been 4 credits. "The haters are just pissed because she calls you on your inability to work" No, I'm pissed because I was asked to do to much and graded to harshly. There were more possible points to loose on a report than the report was worth. How does that work out? Here is what I wrote for my official course evaluation (Still think I'm lazy and incapable of working?): Aside from the warm smiles, this class was an absolute nightmare. EARTH TO THE CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT: THIS IS A **TWO** CREDIT CLASS!!! The workload in this class was astronomical. This lab required about the same amount of time (if not more) than I spend on the homework for all three of my other three credit 400 level engineering classes. What are you thinking? I mean, I understand itâs important to know how to write scientific papers, but this class has more writing than a writing English. There is no instruction in this class whatsoever.* Pages upon pages of reference material are dumped on us and we are supposed to come up with a detailed summary of the theory and experiment. I thought that was the point of having a teacher?? *(Except for the 50 min sig-figs lecture and the 50 minute class where Dr. Coyle covered all four of the two week experiments) Another huge complaint I have is that there are more points for the TAâs to take off than there are possible points to earn on a report. If they donât take off for one thing, they take off for something else. I mean, to be honest, I almost want to say âget a life.â If you have time to take off points from my report because I used âpâ instead of âppâ for the abbreviation of âpagesâ in my references section, you need to find something more productive for our university. Seriously. I got points taken off because I didnât explain in my appendix how I calculated an average. How I calculated an average?!? Come ON. They teach you how to calculate an average in THE 6th GRADE. Should I have also included the multiplication table from elementary school? If we are supposed to be writing scientific papers, what scientific paper would show how to calculate an average in their appendix? Get real. I just canât imagine working as hard as I did in the class (for two credits) and not ending up with an A. But I seriously might not get an A, even after all my hard work and determination. |

| Anonymous Course: CHEM484 Grade Expected: C March 10, 2010, 3:22 am | First, I will admit that I am SCARED to review this teacher, because I still wake up in a panic because my lab report is due, even though it's been almost a semester since I took this course. With that aside, this was the worst class I ever took. I'm not reviewing Coyle because I hate her, you just need be warned if you have not been already. The grading in this course is absurd. Some people face the full force 50% off, and others make huge mistakes that go unnoticed. Different TAs grade different labs, which takes several weeks, and the whole system is broken. If you made a mistake on lab 1, you wont know about it until you've turned in lab 3, which means you lost plenty of points for making the same mistake. Combine the fact that these labs are hard and time consuming, with the fact that you are in other classes and but a mere mortal, you will be miserable. The frustrating part is why this course is hard. It's not hard because the material is challenging (which it is), it's really hard because grading is a nightmare. The standards are too high, either the department needs to better prepare students for this course, or they need to be made managable. It is unrealistic to expect this much from students. Even well cited research chemists have months to prepare, complete, and report on thier experiments. I'm not saying these experiments are that complicated, but even when you do a student research experiment, you have the direction, support and editing of others. Also, Coyle is on a which hunt for cheaters. While it's wrong to cheat on these labs (you're a total you-know-what if you do it while the rest of us slave away), it seems that the honest people are suffering the most. Basically, you have two options. You can work literally 25 hours a week on each lab, run to every TAs office hours, and try to get on Coyle's good side, or you can hunker down, get a C, and be a better person for not telling Coyle where to shove it. The second option also is probably better for your soul, anyway. I know some people were kinda up Coyle's ass, and I refused to do so, and got a C by the skin of my teeth. The course being only 2 credits is actually a god-send, because that way the bad grade you will likely get won't ruin your GPA. I'm pretty sure that whoever gave her a 5 has some sort of schizotypal disorder and is seeing things that aren't there. On another note, I remember I challenged her once on something. I probably was wrong factually, but when I applied some rhetorical logic, she basically flew off the handle at me. I'm sure it's tough being the new kid on the block everyone hates. Don't take this class unless you have to. Sadly, you probably have to. |
| hyeung1 Course: CHEM483 Grade Expected: B+ March 5, 2010, 1:27 pm | Dr coyle is EVIL (look at her department photo if you dont believe me) if you are two seconds late...expect to lose 10% of your lab report. i showed up two minutes late and lost 10% on all three of the assignments i was turning in. You wont learn anything in discussion, but you have to go because she takes attendance. She doesnt help you with the experiment. The error analysis are so hard, even the TA don't know how to do some of them (they just wing it). We had to do presentation towards the end of the semester and we only have 7 minutes. How can someone present an entire article clearly in just seven minutes? The lab reports consumed at least 25 hours per week. It's a fucking two credit course, it is more work than the lecture. and citation...OMG it's bullshit... All the TA grades one experiment for consistency but its really not consistent. If you made a mistake on a lab report, youll never know until they return it three weeks later so you made a common mistake on all the lab reports submitted within that three weeks hence you lose points for something that can be easily fixed. The TA will tell you one thing and another TA will tell you another...its bullshit...so just go each TA thats grading your report and ask them what they want to see on the lab report to summarize... 1.show up to lab/discussion on time 2.cite CAREFULLY 3.just go to all the TA 4.pray |
| Anonymous Course: CHEM483 Grade Expected: C February 18, 2010, 10:11 pm | This laboratory is not something you can describe - it is something you experience. I cannot describe the horror (literally) you go through before each laboratory submission. Grading, as indicated above, is subjective. Passing is as well. Cite too much, she'll declare your lab unacceptable (read 50% off at least). Cite to little and she'll XF you. Sig-figs wrong? - 50% off. Prepare for hell, because she'll certainly deliver. If you are in this class, make sure to ingratiate yourself with her - its the only way you'll pass. |
| Anonymous Course: CHEM483 Grade Expected: February 18, 2010, 9:46 pm | If you think you are getting an education in physical chemistry you are definitely mistaken. This class is not about learning techniques in physical chemistry, instead it is equivalent to being forced to hold a grenade with the pin out. The lab reports will take days not hours because Coyle will say your lab report is unacceptable if she thinks it is too short. Not only that, she will say that if you do not cite something sentence by sentence it is plagiarism. however if you "cite too much" that is unacceptable. she has no heart whatsoever because she does not care what you think, she is always right and you are just an annoying student to her. the best advice is to never take this class, but if you are a chemistry or chemical engineering major, you cannot avoid her so make sure to take only easy classes when you take her class. definitely do not take another lab with this lab no matter how easy the other lab is because it is like your GPA just got carpet bombed with nuclear warhead. If you want to avoid doing badly in the class, then I would say suck up to her alot because everything is subjective in the class. to sum it up this class will fuck you up and you will feel it long after you graduated |
| bbodechan Course: CHEM483 Grade Expected: December 19, 2009, 3:50 am | Pchem labs are required courses for chemistry related majors and this means there is no way to avoid this class. It seems like she has some sort of a personality issues. She really wants to be a perfectionist and she will try to penalize you in any way possible. If you are going to take this class, you must be careful all the time. She is a different type of instructor. |
| Anonymous Course: CHEM484 Grade Expected: A December 17, 2009, 9:03 pm | The lab was much easier than I expected. It was Dr. Coyle's first semester and a lot of the instruments did not work properly. However, she did not penalize any of the students for the problems with lab equipment or poor data. Also, she made the lab reports much easier than with klassen as they were mostly focused on explaining theoretical aspects. She is a really nice and approachable person too! |
| plmqaz Course: CHEM483 Grade Expected: A December 17, 2009, 6:56 pm | So the only reason I gave Dr. Coyle 2 stars rather than 1 is because I got an A. I don't know how, but I somehow did. I waited until the night before and pulled all nighters for 6 out of the 7 experiment lab reports, and got an average of over an 80%, which is pretty weird. There was a lot of leniency associated with her first semester that will probably disappear since she'll get used to how the class is supposed to go, so I think that it will only get worse. Be careful with her, and if you have any problems with her, make sure not to say anything bad inside the chemistry building, because getting on her bad side is not advised. |

She seems like a nice person when you talk to her one-on-one but she just tries to manipulate what she says so she's always right. She doesn't curve the class and gives unacceptable lab reports for the worst fucking reasons. My grade went from a solid B to an F because of one stupid lab. Unacceptable lab reports are totally subjective, and students should not be penalized for bullshit reasons. In conclusion, Candace Marie Coyle can go suck it. She is a heartless fuck-tard |
