The post below comes from an idiot.

Sanjay is the best professor I have had at UMD. The most intellectually satisfying and challenging Econ course I have taken. He made me feel proud to be an Econ major. He is articulate and a genius. He did a great job of making difficult concepts clear. His text online was a very understandable and clear read. He posted many practice problem sets and exams with solutions which was very helpful. His exams were hard but he curved so a 75 was an A. Not an impossible class if you put in the work. It is really a shame he is no longer at UMD.

This class was really hard. Good that he doesn't teach @ UMD any more.

I can state without a slight hesitation that Chugh is absolutely brilliant! He is so good that people from other classes started to sit in on his lectures.

The course is intellectually challenging, but not difficult. Economics is overall a pretty intuitive field. And Chugh exactly demonstrates that by tying macroeconomic theory into real world examples.

This course is about studying economic frame works and employing them to solve issues at hand. Math is heavily employed in this course. When you're first exposed to the material, you'll be so fixated on the math and notations that it'll seem all so overwhelming and difficult. But underneath it all, the concepts are simple and intuitive. It's just the derivatation that's painstaking and takes time to get. Everything will start to make sense toward the latter part of the course.

With that being said, Chugh is a brilliant lecturer and extremely organized (all lectures and readings posted on his website). You can tell that his lectures are well planned ahead of time and the powerpoints carefully constructed. He pauses in between speeches to allow time for the material to sink in and makes stresses at times to reveal important concepts. He sends out an e-mail at the end of each week of a summary of the materials covered in that week’s lectures. It feels as if those are strictly intended for those who skipped lectures, and it makes me almost feel guilty for not going. Chugh has the best of intentions and very professional(not to mention good-looking in suites).

The course comprises two problem sets (15% each), a midterm (30%), and a cumulative final (40%). You’re allowed a single cheat sheet on the midterm, and two sheet sheets on the final, on which you could write down anything. The curve was very steep. On the midterm, 56+ was an A. Both the problem sets and exams are about using the frame works taught in class to analyze the problems. So it’s either a hit or miss. But the curve is extremely fair.

Bottom line, Chugh opened up my eyes to a whole new view on macroeconomic issues. Because of this course, I’m now excited to be an Economics major and can’t wait to deepen my understanding by taking other econ courses.

I just received an A in this course. I would not have learned as much from any other professor. The lectures are difficult to pay attention in, but it is worth being there just to pick up on some of the stuff he says, even if you are playing computer games or doing sudoku the whole time. Not too much busy work, although the problem sets are difficult. The tests are also difficult. I learned a lot though, and the work was well worth it. Do not worry about your grade because there is a massive curve. If you read his online textbook and work hard on the problem sets, it should not be too bad. You may be frustrated with this class while taking it, but afterward, when looking back at what you have learned, you will be glad that you did.

Absolutely brilliant. By far the best professor in the econ department. He's extremely articulate and incredible organized. His PowerPoints are very thorough, and not filled with useless information. He flawlessly ties macroeconomic theory into real world examples. He's also very approachable and willing to help students.

This class with Sanjay is TOUGH and very advanced....He goes too in depth in some theories and expect you to know it all. There is 2 problem sets, midterm and final exam, you get to have a "cheat sheet" but its useless anyway. The average for our midterm was a 61%.
He is extremely articulate and a genius (and he is pretty young). Great professor for this course, he is actually teaching the same course (econ325) at JohnHopkins Masters level. Just look at his website: skchugh.com

Despite the negative remarks you might end up hearing about him, Professor Chugh is actually a very good auditory lecturer. His slides and supplementary notes are incredibly organized and cohesive. His homeworks are the exact format of the exams, so theres no surprise. His vocabulary might be complex and above average, but he does a good job of stupifying himself to break some of the concepts down. Its not that his exams were hard, like others might say, they just required more time just to "get it" than he alloted. Overall, this is a challenging course, but you end up actually learning what Macroeconomics actually is by the end. My rating is a 4 because I feel as if he is the best teacher for this subject so far. Yeah, and theres a huge curve, so best believe I'm happy about that.
