Reviews for Earlene Armstrong

If you signed up for this class, withdraw now. Professor Armstrong is evil and apparently loves to see students fail. When I went to her office hours she either was not there or literally laughed off my questions. Her tests are hard as shit for no reason and everything is based on little stuff she probably mentioned once. Sometimes she'll say something isn't on the test but it will end up there anyway.

Discussion is a waste of time; the TA can barely speak English and doesn't help with the class at all.

(BTW, it's funny how her earlier reviews were really positive. I don't know what happened to her between 2007 and now, but she's an evil ass bitter old woman now. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS.)

The class is pretty entertaining, especially when she brings in random insects. The discussion is also great, assuming you enjoy dissecting things. There is a lab that involves a Smithsonian scavenger hunt (you actually have to go) for homework, so if you don't want to go off-campus on your own time, don't take the class.
You'll need to do a lot of studying (I studied for about 5-7 hours per test), but there isn't much homework outside of class, so it's not so big a problem. Make sure to write down literally everything, because it's all fair game. Even if something seems insignificant, make sure you can at least recognize it in multiple choice question format. There were only about ten questions max she didn't go over in class. No matter what she says, make sure you know absolutely everything about pauro/hemi/etc.metabolous stuff. Especially which insects have which. You've been warned, so don't complain later.

Dr. Armstrong is really not as bad as people say. You can tell she really likes insects, and enthusiasm about what one is teaching is always a plus in my book. True, she's not the most entertaining lecturer, but at least to me, the material was interesting enough to make up for it. Well, at least the material from the second half of BSCI120. Basically, that's how it is: the semester is divided into two imaginary halves, with the first half being very boring for someone taking this class as an elective. You will learn about insect anatomy, classification, internal systems, etc. - very dry stuff. The second half of the semester, however, gets a lost more interesting. Each insect order gets discussed in detail, and you end up learning things that are more pertinent to everyday life - things like pest identification / control, insect-vectored diseases, and how to distinguish similar-looking insects from each other.

The discussion section was not the best, because for the most part, it was completely detached from what we were learning in lecture. However, we did have a couple exam review sessions, so that was helpful. The guy's accent was strong, but certainly not impossible to understand.

Do yourelf a favor and avoid taking this class. When your signing up for your cores and you come across this one, keep right the hell on going and find another one. You are led to believe that this course wll be interesting and that you would enjoy the class. LIES LIKE S***! The test are more than hard and the discussion section would be much more productive if the TA knew what was going on in the course. This class nearly fucked my gpa, and even though I ended up with a C, the pain of being worried about my grade the entire semester was not worth it. There's nothing worse than spending weeks worrying about if you'll fail a class and having to depend on the final to save you. She had her moments where she came off friendly, but for the most part she was cold and seemed aggitated when students were having a hard time with the material.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. the TA barely spoke english and could ot help during reviews. I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.

This class was so much harder and more burdensome than a CORE Science should be. A lot of lab work, very detailed and difficult tests, and class attendance is necessary if you intend to pass. Avoid it if at all possible. Also, comment blow is epic.

I expected to get an A and should have. She lied to our class about the information on every exam. Do not take this class with her, she is a liar and the f***ing worst. I approached her multiple times to ask her about why certain information that she specifically said would not be on the exam was and she basically laughed in my face and blew me off. Don't take her class so she gets fired. By far the worst teacher I have ever had dating back to kindergarten. If you ever read this Earlene go f*** yourself I hope you get eaten by a sworn of locusts you f***ing b****.

This class is hard as shit! I admit she is a very nice and engaging professor but if you do not have time and just need a core credit DONT TAKE THE CLASS! youre going to have to take intensive notes and take INTENSVIE exams. they are so freaking informative you have to know everysingle little detail! The TA was really good and as long as you go to EVERY discussion you can raise your grade up .

If you sign up for this class being able to skip the lectures and still get an A, drop this class right now. You will fail. Even if you do show up to every lecture and take great notes, getting a good grade can be an uphill battle. Although she knows everything there is to about insects, she is not very helpful at her office hours and will often include material on the exams either not covered in lecture or material that she says she won't put on the exams.

Don't take this class as a CORE! It's just not worth it...she'll tell you what you don't have to know for the test, but then put whatever that is on the test anyway. NOT an easy class, and she's not a good teacher. The TA (Alan Leslie) is the man though.

If you think this class is easy, it is not. She makes you know the smallest detail about each bug and it is terrible. If I had a song to catergoize this class it would be "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter since every Tuesday and Thursday at 9:30 AM it was going to be a bad day since you have to attend her detail-ridden lectures and she is BORING. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. YOU WILL FAIL.

There's a rumor going around that this class is easy. It's not. Unless your going to REALLY study and stay on top of her with your grades (she can be a bit unorganized) you will FAIL. It's that simple. You can't just float through this class.

Made a very boring subject very interesting. Does not get to know her students, but manages to keep them interested. Very funny, which is useful, because you won't get an A without going to class. Take good lecture notes!

She was a great lecturer and very entertaining to listen to. She managed to make insects quite interesting and really knew what she was talking about.
